Ipoh to Penang Food Crawl (Finale)

Saturday, December 5, 2009

Finally, we have reach to the end of our crazy and full of sinful food crawl. We were back in Ipoh after the heavy dinner in Penang Island. What else to do once we were up from bed? Well, you're absolutely correct! EAT again. CW wanted to go to Dai Shue Keok (Big Tree Leg) for breakfast. That's my first time having breakfast there too. Usually Hubby and I will only be going there for lunch or evening tea time. I can't imagine that early in the morning the place is already crowded with people. I guess FOOD = MANY PEOPLE.

Some of items available in this place.

Varieties of fruit juices too.

Majority of people going to Dai Shue Keok will be having their 'liu fan' (noodles plus yong tau fu stuffs). Some of the items available and pricing. Very reasonably priced food stuffs. We definitely can't get the same quality with the same price tag anywhere in KL.

Their menu and pricing.

You can freely pick up whichever 'liu' that you wanted and place in a bowl. Mentioned to the workers there what types of noodles you want (mee, kuey teow, etc and curry, laksa etc) and mentioned where you sit and you can go back to your table and wait for the food items to come.

Queuing up for the cook to prepare.

This is what we ordered. Full of fish paste, crunchy and yummy 'liu'.

We were really big eaters here. Another bowl for our table.

Eat the 'liu' with the choice of noodles you want.

If you're not really into the 'liu fan' thingy, there's plenty of other choices for you to choose. For example, Nasi Nyonya that is being ordered by CW. According to CW, the rice was good. So something new to try out if you wanted to have rice.

Nasi Nyonya

So that's the end of our food crawl for this holiday. Oh ya, before we went back to KL, we were actually having lunch in my in-laws house. No pictures from them, I don't want to been seen as a wacko by my in-laws of snapping food in the dining table. Till then.... ADIOS!

Ipoh to Penang Food Crawl Part 6

Our last stop is in New Lane aka Lorong Baru. There was a stretch of hawker stalls along the road. So now it's dinner time after some shopping for Tambun Biscuits. We ordered lots and lots of FOOD. So be prepared to wait awhile for all the food pictures to be loaded up. So no more words from me for now... LETS FEAST the FOOD with OUR EYES now!.....

The place we had for our dinner.

Cendol.

Penang Hokkien Mee aka Prawn Mee

Chee Cheung Fun - good stuffs. I love both of their sauce and the CCF was so smooth and soft.

Char Kuey Teow. Kinda pricey though - RM6

Otak-otak. Average only.

Or Jian (Oyster). We almost ate half then only I realised I had not snapped any pictures.

Chicken and Pork Satay. Yummm..

Very Expensive Seafood Kuey Kak. Cost RM 6.

Sui Kow. Yummy. THUMBS UP!

Roasted Char Siew, Siew Yoke and Chicken. Yes, we are CARNIVORES!

After this heavy meal, we drove around Gurney Drive and head back to Ipoh. So next post will be our finale for our weekend food crawl. Stay tuned!

We stopped by Kedai Biskut Bee Heong to purhase some Tambun Biscuits. Since I had tasted the famous Him Heang biscuits numerous times, I decided to try on something new and different. It seems that this shop sells different varieties of Tambun Biscuits ranging from original, apple, chocolate, mango, pandan, red bean, green tea, fruit, pineapple, sambal udang, durian, peanut, jagung, coffee, orange and yam. You will definitely be spoilt of choices to choose from the shelves.

Look for their signage. This shop is situated in the New Lane just opposite Sunway Hotel.

You can buy the small packing to taste more flavours.

4 small packets packed into 1 (good as souvenir).

I bought Sambal Udang Flavour. Love it! Very aromatic and tasty.

One bite on this, your mouth will be filled with fragrant durian taste. Recommended for durian lovers.

Coffee Flavour Heong Ping. The coffee smell were so tempting.

So if you wanted to try out unconventional Tambun biscuits, do dropped by this place to give it a try. I am going to get Sambal Udang flavour again when I am going Penang again. (Hmmm... Wonder when..)

Ipoh to Penang Food Crawl Part 4

After our stop in Queensbay, we were heading to the Air Itam area to visit Kek Lok Si Temple. While on our way to the temple, a Penang friend had recommended us to stop by a restaurant nearby that area to savour some tasty Mee Goreng Mamak. So we decided to try the place out due to the recommendation. This place was situated next to a bank. I forgotten which bank is that since it's actually quite some time ago and my memory are failing me nowadays. ^Sob sob^. Nevertheless, I did snapped the picture of the name of the shop.

Success Coffeeshop

Since we saw people trying out their Mee Rebus as well, we ordered both Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus. 4 people and 2 plates of noodles. Other patrons must be thinking we were out of cash to share this 2 plates among 4 of us. What to do? We were practically eating non-stop since morning. Must practice moderation you know. Overall, I'll say there's basically nothing to shout about for their Mee Goreng. It was just mediocre but for their Mee Rebus, this noodles was slightly above average. (All this are based on my individual preference, others might not feel the same)

Mee Goreng Mamak

Finding a parking in Kek Lok Si Temple area was quite horrendous experience. Everywhere is PEOPLE and CAR! Lucky us, we managed to find a parking in a short time. How can we go Penang and never eat their Asam Laksa. We went for the famous Asam Laksa in Pasar Air Itam.

Famous Asam Laksa in Air Itam.

Shop owner was very busy preparing each and every bowl of yummy laksa.

While waiting, we had our cooling sugar cane. It's purely sugar cane without any additional sugar. I think it cost around RM1.20. Definitely value for money.

Yummy and tangy Asam Laksa. Slurrp slurrp. Full of fish meats and it's just RM2.70 per bowl.

Bon Appetit!

Ipoh to Penang Food Crawl Part 3

This is a continuation post from the earlier ones. We were heading up north to continue our gastronomic adventure. Penang here we come! None of us were actually familiar with the roads in Penang but as CW said, 'The worst of is we ended up rounding the whole island. As long as we were still in the island, we should be fine'. Hmmm, quite true since our main objective is to look for food in Penang and every where in the island, there is food.

140km to go....

Before we realised, we were at the bridge d... Our destination is approaching..

First stop, Queensbay Mall - one of the biggest shopping mall in the island.

Since we were quite full from our breakfast, we decided to go window shopping in the mall first. In the previous night, I had searched over the Internet and there's one particular restaurant that caught my attention in this mall - T-Bowl Restaurant ( A restaurant setup based on the theme of bathroom, toilet bowl and etc). I supposed it was the first outlet in Malaysia. There's another one opening soon in Kuala Lumpur. So after strolling around in the mall, we decided to pay this funny themed restaurant a visit for a light meal or shall I rightfully say to try out their dishes served in eeeer,,,, 'Toilet bowl?"

Of course, when we were there, I took the opportunity to snap some of the photos of their interior. Here you go ----------

A shower head in the restaurant? Anyone care to shower here??? Hehehe...

Some of the miniature items on display at their counter.

We were practically seating at a toilet bowl (as chair) and wash basin (as table). Cool setup!

Different designs on the toilet bowl.

Some of their food items in the menu display on their wall.

Funny and cute comics too..

Lime juice to quench our thirst.

What do you think? Does this ice-cream dessert resemble something familiar to you?

Still can't guess what it resemble? Look at another picture to freshen up your memory... :P

TAAADAAAA - the master piece. Porridge in 'you know what'....

Me posing with the porridge...

See my face? Am sitting at the toilet bowl and pretending........ Wakakakaka...

Go and try out the new place if you 'dare' or brave for new stuffs. Definitely not for the faint- hearted. I believe it's just all in our mind. If we don't think too much, it should be okay to give this place a try. :)

Ipoh to Penang Food Crawl Part 2

After our chicken wing meal for supper, we were heading for some Dim Sum breakfast the following day at 8.30am. Due to the large holiday crowd in Ipoh, we decided to go for Dim Sum in the Ming Court Hong Kong Tim Sum (situated opposite Foh San Dim Sum) in the hope for a lesser crowd and we were so wrong.

On the way for pipping hot and yummy Dim Sum.

As what we had predicted earlier, all the eatery places were jam packed with people (locals and of course tourists). I supposed 'kiasu-ism' needs to kick in whenever we were looking for a table during this peak season. The four of us waited around 20 minutes to get our seats in Ming Court. Not too bad for a waiting time after all taking into consideration it's a holiday weekend.

Our tables were fulled of various Dim Sum.

Flaky egg tarts

Some fried stuffs, forgot what it is.

Loh Bak Ko aka Radish Cake

Steamed Spare Ribs

Different type of Siew Mai

Har Kow Lookalike

Another Steamed Dim Sum

Fish Ball

Loh Mai Kai

Fried Fish Balls

Black Sesame Dessert

Sang Yuk Pau

Fillings inside the pau.

Wondering how jam packed the restaurant is? Have a look at the picture yourself to get the answer.

Ming Court Hong Kong Dim Sum Restaurant

Overall, the Dim Sum offered in Ming Court were good but I still prefer the ones prepared in Foh San. Maybe it's just my preference. Different people have different taste buds. Hehe... So after our Dim Sum breakfast, we were heading up north to Penang for another round of foodilicious trip. See you guys again in my next post.
