Ipoh to Penang Food Crawl (Finale)

Saturday, December 5, 2009

Finally, we have reach to the end of our crazy and full of sinful food crawl. We were back in Ipoh after the heavy dinner in Penang Island. What else to do once we were up from bed? Well, you're absolutely correct! EAT again. CW wanted to go to Dai Shue Keok (Big Tree Leg) for breakfast. That's my first time having breakfast there too. Usually Hubby and I will only be going there for lunch or evening tea time. I can't imagine that early in the morning the place is already crowded with people. I guess FOOD = MANY PEOPLE.

Some of items available in this place.

Varieties of fruit juices too.

Majority of people going to Dai Shue Keok will be having their 'liu fan' (noodles plus yong tau fu stuffs). Some of the items available and pricing. Very reasonably priced food stuffs. We definitely can't get the same quality with the same price tag anywhere in KL.

Their menu and pricing.

You can freely pick up whichever 'liu' that you wanted and place in a bowl. Mentioned to the workers there what types of noodles you want (mee, kuey teow, etc and curry, laksa etc) and mentioned where you sit and you can go back to your table and wait for the food items to come.

Queuing up for the cook to prepare.

This is what we ordered. Full of fish paste, crunchy and yummy 'liu'.

We were really big eaters here. Another bowl for our table.

Eat the 'liu' with the choice of noodles you want.

If you're not really into the 'liu fan' thingy, there's plenty of other choices for you to choose. For example, Nasi Nyonya that is being ordered by CW. According to CW, the rice was good. So something new to try out if you wanted to have rice.

Nasi Nyonya

So that's the end of our food crawl for this holiday. Oh ya, before we went back to KL, we were actually having lunch in my in-laws house. No pictures from them, I don't want to been seen as a wacko by my in-laws of snapping food in the dining table. Till then.... ADIOS!

Ipoh to Penang Food Crawl Part 2

After our chicken wing meal for supper, we were heading for some Dim Sum breakfast the following day at 8.30am. Due to the large holiday crowd in Ipoh, we decided to go for Dim Sum in the Ming Court Hong Kong Tim Sum (situated opposite Foh San Dim Sum) in the hope for a lesser crowd and we were so wrong.

On the way for pipping hot and yummy Dim Sum.

As what we had predicted earlier, all the eatery places were jam packed with people (locals and of course tourists). I supposed 'kiasu-ism' needs to kick in whenever we were looking for a table during this peak season. The four of us waited around 20 minutes to get our seats in Ming Court. Not too bad for a waiting time after all taking into consideration it's a holiday weekend.

Our tables were fulled of various Dim Sum.

Flaky egg tarts

Some fried stuffs, forgot what it is.

Loh Bak Ko aka Radish Cake

Steamed Spare Ribs

Different type of Siew Mai

Har Kow Lookalike

Another Steamed Dim Sum

Fish Ball

Loh Mai Kai

Fried Fish Balls

Black Sesame Dessert

Sang Yuk Pau

Fillings inside the pau.

Wondering how jam packed the restaurant is? Have a look at the picture yourself to get the answer.

Ming Court Hong Kong Dim Sum Restaurant

Overall, the Dim Sum offered in Ming Court were good but I still prefer the ones prepared in Foh San. Maybe it's just my preference. Different people have different taste buds. Hehe... So after our Dim Sum breakfast, we were heading up north to Penang for another round of foodilicious trip. See you guys again in my next post.

Ipoh to Penang Food Crawl Part 1

We were blessed as 27th Nov 09 was a public holiday in conjunction with the Hari Raya Qurban. Much to our delight it was a Friday too which means we will have 3 consecutive non-working day. Yippee! Thus, we had decided to go for a Food Crawl Trip up North from Ipoh to Penang. We had another 2 of our regular makan kakis with us for this sinful and yummylicious food crawl trip (CW and LYH). Since CW was working on Friday morning and only joining us for dinner at night in Ipoh. So our first stop in Ipoh is non other than my favourite 'Big Small Leg' as the local called it in Pasir Pinji Ipoh. I had blogged about this place in my blog here.

Nice and cooling lime drink. Slightly different from the ones I had tasted before. Worth to try. NICE!

As usual, soft and melt in you mouth Braised Chicken Feet.

You can have a choice of noodles (meehoon, mee or kueyteow) to savour together the yummy chicken feet.

The yong tau fu aka 'liu' were ordered separately. You can pick which type you like and passed the your selection to them.

Ipoh famous Crunchy Taugeh. Yum yum.

After a wholesome and yummy meal in Restoran Kum Kee, we ventured into Ipoh town and dropped by Restoran Chee Wah for their famous chicken wings. Very nicely marinated, juicy and grilled to perfection. According to Hubby, this place is famous for their Claypot Loh Shu Fan too beside their chicken wings.

Restoran Chee Wah (I had asked 2 local Ipoh people -Hubby and LYH for their address or maybe street name, both failed to provide a name for me). So no location for this place. Sorry folks!

Aromatic and juicy grilled wings.

Their wings were so delicious.
(*I believe I can 'fly'* singing the song while eating). Hehe...

So this is our first day of our food crawl. More to come in the coming posts.
Stay tuned! .....

Hong Kee Mah Chee

There seems to be a lot of great food being offered in the Pasir Pinji area. This stall has been featured in newspaper and Hochiak before. They are two items sold in the stall 'Mah Chee' and 'Far Sang Wu' aka Peanut Soup. The stall were located at the road side just in front of the housing area. You definitely won't missed it once you were in the Pasir Pinji area.

Both items sold at the price of RM1.50

Funny Mountain Soya Bean

My first experience tasting this Tau Fu Far was few years back with a few of my colleagues during our makan trip to Ipoh. We were instantly in love with the silky smooth Tau Fu Far which basically glides down you throat and have the 'warmify' tummy effect. Goodness... Slurp slurp and the best part if you don't enjoy to have the Tau Fu Far at their shop due to the hot weather, you can basically order them and enjoy the rich goodness in the comfort of your air-conditioned car. Yup yup; they have drive thru service. Super fast and super efficient! Besides Tau Fu Far, they also sells Soya Bean Milk and Cincau or you can basically mixed both of them to have MJ (Cincau plus soya bean milk)

So nowadays, I always pay them a visit everytime we were back in Ipoh to have my 'fix' of Tau Fu Far craving. All this were done while waiting for my Pasir Pinji Chee Cheung Fun.

The Legendary Pasir Pinji Chee Cheung Fun

I had finally managed to pay a visit to the legendary Pasir Pinji Chee Cheung Fun where I heard a lot of praises and the funny part of this Chee Cheung Fun seller, every customer who walks in need to obtain a queue number before being served. That's what we call system. Initially I thought we will be given a small ticket with number but I am so wrong. They basically just give you a number and you need to remember it by heart. So after getting the number, you need to be prepare to wait and I really meant it - WAIT with PATIENCE. This Chee Cheung Fun was operated by an old couple where the Uncle was responsible in making the Chee Cheung Fun at the back of their house and the Aunty with the help of a helper were in charge of cutting and putting sauces to the freshly made Chee Cheung Fun.

The Chee Cheung Fun stall were located in a housing area situated at Jln Pasir Pinji 5

We were walking to our destination after getting our car parked at the nearby shop lot
We were approaching our destination.... Yippee!

In case you are wondering, the house number was 1456

Auntie seems to be pretty busy at the counter...

So I was practically happily snapping pictures of the surrounding while Hubby getting our queue number. While snapping pictures, the lady helper of the stall was telling me, 'Don't snap my face ya'. OOps.. Sorry, luckily I wasn't snapping her picture at all. Then I realised an old Uncle was busy preparing fresh Chee Cheung Fun at the back of the house. I am so tempted to snap the Uncle's picture but dare not since it was situated at the back of the house. After waiting for a few minutes, we managed to get our number. We were lucky 26 for the day. The Auntie was telling us, go and 'jalan-jalan' first, it will take some time till your number. At that moment, I think the running number was around 7. I looked at my watch and it was around 1.45pm. So we decided to wander around Ipoh town to look for the best Tau Fu Far in town (refer to my post here) while waiting for our turn for Chee Cheung Fun.

We came back to the stall around 3pm and we were no where near the number 26. Number 19 was still sitting there waiting for his 'tar pau'. OMG, I was thinking, it really take ages for our 26 number. Hubby and I decided to try the Thai Style Otak-otak that was sold in the place while waiting. The Otak-otak tasted spicy and full of fish meats. Just the right spiciness for me and it cost us RM4 only. I bet we can't find this kinda Otak-otak with the same price tag in KL. After getting our tummy filled with some Otak-otak while trying to kill of some time waiting for our turn, I get another shock in life, number 12 customer came and ask for his order. You must be surprised to hear the amount of 'tar pau' he had ordered, it was 30 packs of Chee Cheung Fun. I guess it will really take ages till our number 26. So AGAIN, we decided to leave the stall and wander around again for some snack before going back to our Chee Cheung Fun order. Wonder what we had this time. Kindly click here and here.
Thai Style Otak-otak

Meaty and spicy fish meat..

It was GOOD and decently priced

After having some drinks and snacks, we were back at Pasir Pinji Chee Cheung Fun. Luckily it was almost our turn now and it was 4pm plus when we got our ordered 'tar pau'. This is definitely the longest waiting time for a Chee Cheung Fun I had in life till date. 5 packs of Chee Cheung Fun took us 2 hours plus waiting. So averagely 1 pack of Chee Cheung Fun took half an hour to be prepared. *Faint*

Our long awaited Chee Cheung Fun

After the long 2 hours plus wait, we were back at home sitting comfortably savouring the Chee Cheung Fun. They just melts in you mouth, soft and smooth combines with their sauces and green chillies and fried shallots and not forgetting the fragrance of the dried shrimps. It was wonderful and heaven. Definitely worth the wait but I think I shall only pay them my second visit during a non-holiday season to cut down of the waiting time. :)
